Ballin' for a Cause 2014!

We are in the early planning phase of our 4th Flag Football event, “Ballin'
for a Cause”!!!
Ballin’ for a Cause is a free community event that One by 1 Inc. hosts to benefit a selected organization in the area. The events purpose and intent is to increase peace, help reduce the tension and strengthen the trust and ties between our brothers and sisters in law enforcement and members of the community by creating a space for both to come together on the common ground of the football field for the selected cause; collecting New toys and books for Children's National Medical Center, Washington, DC.

Visit our Events page to learn more about the event and get involved!

Seventy Percent of Juvenile Justice System Involved Youth Have a
Mental Disorder

Reclaiming Futures announced a new white paper issued by
the Collaborative for Change, that reveals 70 percent of young
people involved with the juvenile justice system have been diagnosed with a mental disorder. To learn more about Reclaiming
Futures

The paper, “Better Solutions for Youth with Mental Health Needs in the Juvenile Justice System,” tackles the issues of mental health screenings, diversion strategies, mental health training for those working with adolescents, evidence based practices, training and
resources for getting families involved, and juvenile competency.

12/2/2013 ~ Focus on Youth

Research Shows that  Positive Experience in Juvenile Justice System Can Reduce Recidivism by Almost  50 Percent

“Hearing” what juvenile offenders are saying rather  than just “listening” to them can produce astounding  results
Reclaiming Futures reports that two research briefs show a link to a juvenile’s experience in the juvenile justice systems and whether or not he or she will recidivate.

According to Reclaiming  Futures the briefs show “Young people in the juvenile justice system who  have an overall positive experience are 49 percent less likely to continue  committing crimes, according to arrest and/or return-to-placement reports.”

Policing Our Schools

Houston Schools are adding more officers into the schools which is leading to more children arrested and juveniles in court.  Minor infractions and miscellaneous hallway silliness can cost a child a day in court.   Has the radical zero tolerance rule created a hostile environment for our children making it impossible to focus on learning and contributing to the school to prison pipeline?  Read the NY Times article decribing the addition of officers to their public schools.  Learn more about the School to Prison Pipeline a the ACLU site.  How are our children being served when we are adding officers and closing schools at the same time?

Kool Kids is Kicking it Up!

Kool Kids Digital Storytelling Project (a Benevolent Media Pitch Night Finalist) is beginning Series II!  Kool Kids develops young people to transform themselves, their peers and their communities by becoming the next generation of confident leaders whom use media to have a positive impact on their peers.   The Project's core assumptions are that youth can engage in behaviors that are age-appropriate, diverse and will positively influence their peers; can be critical thinkers and leaders when given opportunities to do so; and can develop a mature sense of values that will lead them in discerning between right and wrong.

A Personal Story of Survival

The Out for Good documentary is an important tool to reach our youth and community.  Screenings at classrooms/schools, workshops and community events will help our children understand the importance of making good choices, the consequences of making bad choices for ourselves and most important how we all have the ability to change our ways to make a better future for ourselves.
This year One by 1 has presented workshops and trainings to over 200 students,
