Kool Kids! - Digital Storytelling Project
Kool Kids! is an important piece in encouraging a generation of confident young people. It promotes creativity and positive peer motivation through facilitated social interaction in a neutral environment. In this enrichment activity, youth are encouraged to share and create dialogue that has a positive impact on their peers while also reflecting on their own views and values. Kool Kids! gives youth a platform through which they are able to share their thoughts and opinions on what being a "kool" kid means to them.

In a society overly saturated with images of violence and age-inappropriate behavior, this project allows young people to provide and reinforce alternative images and messages that promote healthy behavior.
The digital storytelling component encourages youth to transform themselves and their communities by becoming the next generation of media makers and leaders and empowers them to lead a shift in media-influenced culture towards building healthy communities.
Each quarter, ten middle and high school-aged youth film themselves and their peers discussing and demonstrating what "kool" means. They are prompted through questions about their values and goals and are asked to do what they naturally do: influence each other, but in ways that promote positivity and creativity. By participating in the project, youth develop interviewing and video production and editing skills and the videos they create act as tools for youth and community development. At the end of the quarter, the videos are compiled, edited and showcased to the community.
