We work to keep the community safe and strive to keep our young people out of trouble. We work with youth by providing mentoring services and skill based projects designed to build self-esteem, confidence, cultivate leadership skills and improve decision making. We also work directly with youth who are at risk, or already involved in the juvenile justice system and try to keep them on the right path. We assist in the transition of returning citizens by providing resources, trainings and support services to assist with the reentry process.
One by 1 is dedicated to investing in our youth by creating child centered/focused projects and activities that promote positive peer engagement, personal development and growth which directly impact life skills including communication skills, coping and problem-solving skills. Our focus is on the whole child’s well-being, personally, emotionally and academically. One by 1 understands the importance of creating a better community environment for our youth to thrive. Environmental variables directly affect a youth’s growth and development. Our prevention programs present opportunities for our youth to participate in meaningful constructive activities as an alternative to engaging in risky behaviors. With One by 1 staff, youth also participate in a leadership development workshop series to guide their projects. The series covers topics such as school, friends, and parents. Without strong role models or a supportive family unit, young people turn to peers who also lack positive role models. They are more likely to engage in risky behavior, or be recruited into criminal activities. According to the Children’s Defense Fund, nearly 4,302 children on average are arrested each day Because there is such a lack of healthy parental figures and role models, a gross lack of funds for youth programs and employment, and high rates of incarceration and failed reentry programs, youth are given very few opportunities to engage in meaningful activities where they challenge themselves to be healthy leaders.
"Out for Good" - This workshop is showcased in community settings and is geared towards middle and high school youth. The workshop includes the screening of the documentary, "Out for Good", which is based on the founders life story and experience since returning home from prison. Following the screening there is a question and answer session forum. The youth audience engages in discussion on the documentary including the choices the subject made as a teen that cost his freedom, how he made the decision to make a personal change for himself. This workshop will project to our youth where our bad choices in life can take us by providing a real life example and story to relate to. The youth will gain knowledge of consequences for choices that they make.
Kool Kids- Youth Giving Back! One by 1‘s "Kool Kids- Digital Storytelling Project" encourages young people to transform themselves and their communities, by becoming the next generation of media makers and confident leaders. The project aims to guide youth in redefining what being "kool" means today. The projects core assumptions are that kool kids can engage in activities that are diverse, positive, and will influence their peers; are comfortable being their own person, and can develop a mature sense of their values that will lead them to understanding what is right and what is wrong; and that kool kids know it's ok to be just a kid that doesn't indulge in adult or age inappropriate behavior, rather finds joy in being young and exudes that to those around them. In a society overly saturated with images of violence and age inappropriate behavior, this project allows young people to provide and reinforce alternative images and messages to promote healthy behavior. Each quarter ten middle and high school aged youth document themselves and their peers discussing and demonstrating what kool means. They are prompted through questions, such as, "Think of what is important to you in your life. What is it? Why is it important", to do what they naturally do-influence each other in ways that promote positivity and creativity. Kool Kids aims to change the cycle of self-destructive behaviors by allowing youth to engage in activities that will prevent incarceration and that shift media influenced culture, towards building healthy communities. The project seeks to develop the film-making skills of youth, that includes interviewing and editing skills, as well as to have them to give back to their peers. The videos are a tool for youth and community development. The videos are compiled, edited and showcased to the community at the end of each quarter.
Mentoring - One by 1’s mentoring program is an enrichment program servicing middle and high school youth. By program end the youth will have strengthened their thinking, confidence and leadership skills.
Healthy Kids Workshop; the power of choice- will help our youth with making healthy choices for themselves, including what healthy friendships look like, how friends can influence our choices, discusses the major impact that their choices have on their life and future and goal setting. The workshop will help our youth by emphasizing the importance of how and who we choose as friends and dealing with negative peer pressure. This workshop is conducted in school settings as well as community events.
Bullying Workshop- This workshop is presented in community settings open to the public and in school settings. The Bullying Workshop is designed to help kids learn effective ways to combat and respond effectively to bullying situations. When children are given and understand the basic key concepts and logical resolutions of bullying reviewed in this workshop, they will be at an advantage on how to work thru a bullying situation even if they are the bully. At the workshop’s end, youth are able to walk away with strategies on dealing with and ways to resolve a bullying situation.
Violence Workshop; alternatives to violence- This workshop explores alternatives to violence with a power point presentation and curriculum handouts. With small/large group participation, role playing and encouraged dialogue, youth will share their ideas and opinions on how to problem solve, diffuse confrontations that can lead to violence and methods and will be able to make better decisions when responding to violence. This workshop will help to reduce youth violence and physical altercations and is presented in school settings and organized community workshops.
In the Community- Ballin’ for a Cause is a free community event that One by 1 hosts for a selected organization in the area. The events purpose and intent is to reduce the tension and strengthen the trust and ties between our brothers and sisters in law enforcement and members of the community by creating a space for both to come together on the common ground of the football field for the selected cause of the event. Our event brings families and the community together, allows people to network, allows the community to see the police in another light other than law enforcement, and allows the police to feel comfortable in the communities in which they serve. Because these ties are often strained, this event has encouraged the participation of both the police and community to have fun with a purpose. Our July 2012 event sponsoring Children’s National Medical Center supplied and stocked the shelves of their Patient Center with new toys and books. Our 2010 and 2011 Ballin’ for a Cause events were a great success with in 2011 One by 1 securing over 20 bags of clothing and shoes for Martha’s Table in the District and in 2010 supplying numerous school supplies to the Maya Angelou Charter School in the District providing every student with a new school supply.
